WHAT ARE PLUMBING REPIPES & HOW DO YOU KNOW YOU MAY NEED ONE

Plumbing repipes are needed when your buildings plumbing leaks and small repairs won’t fix a more significant issue. Plumbing repipes are not uncommon for older homes where the plumbing material used was galvanized steel or cast iron. In general terms and under normal usage galvanized steel plumbing pipes last 20 – 50 years, cast iron plumbing pipes last 75 – 100 years and today’s PVC pipes last indefinitely.

One exception is for homes built using polybutylene plumbing pipes. Homes & buildings constructed during 1970 through the 1990s might have used polybutylene plumbing pipes. These pipes are a gray plastic material and are extremely prone to breakage. Today, new home purchases requiring a home inspection won’t pass inspections until all polybutylene plumbing has been replaced.

PLUMBING REPIPES EARLY WARNING SIGNS

If you suspect that you may need plumbing repipes, one of the first things you should do is some research on your home. What kind of plumbing pipes do you have? The type of pips you have will be a great start in determining your estimated repair costs.

Other things to look out for are physical signs of plumbing leaks such as:

  • Increased water bills
  • Low water pressure
  • Your washing machine filling slower than normal
  • Water appearing to have a slight brownish tint
  • Unusual sounds in your walls

All these problems may require a whole house plumbing repipe. If your house is on a slab, repairs could be more complicated and make it more difficult. In this case, plumbing repipes will need to be re-routed between your drywall and wall framing materials. The best thing to do if you find yourself in this situation is to call a licensed plumbing professional. Plumbers have the experienced needed to re-route your plumbing and change older fittings to newer up-to-date fittings.
